Imagine the life of the Indians dating back 17,000 years at Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park. An earthen lodge has original floors dating back to 1015, the mound has remains of more than 100 Native Americans, and the nearby museum shows more than 2,000 artifacts from their lives. But don’t stop there – 702 acres meander through wetlands, forests, and fields by the Ocmulgee River and Walnut Creek. Picnic tables can host the perfect celebration to top off your new historical memories.

Part of the 11-mile Ocmulgee Heritage Trail weaves through the National Historical Park, and this treasure meanders along the banks of the Ocmulgee River. Take a stroll, jog, or bike ride; you can even train for a marathon on this gem that takes you through parts of downtown Macon.

The Amerson River Park is at the other end of the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail, with more than seven miles of trails within this park, including a beautiful view of the river from high bluffs. Launch a tube at the Jay Hall Memorial Canoe Launch and enjoy a luxurious two-mile easy float before you take out at Bragg Jam Canoe takeout. Needless to say, you can kayak or canoe the same route. This park has a handicap accessible playground where all children can slide, swing, and play. Free of charge, the park is open from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

If you want to enjoy a peaceful paddle down the river but don’t want to worry about the details of your trip, just call Ocmulgee Outdoor Expeditions and hop in the provided canoe or kayak.

Just outside Macon, Lake Tobesofkee has 35 miles of beautiful shoreline for swimmers, boaters, enthusiastic anglers, and hikers to enjoy. The Tobesofkee Recreation area is more than 1,800 acres and has three parks that offer easy access to the lake and campgrounds, boat ramps, swimming beaches, and children’s playgrounds. On the beautiful shores of Lake Tobesofkee’s Arrowhead Park, there are more than seven miles of easy trails for a hike or bike ride. Located on Columbus Road near U.S. 80, the facility is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sandy Beach Park, as the name suggests, has a beautiful white sandy beach. Claystone Park also has a large beach with children’s playgrounds on Moseley Dixon Road; the park is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. with camping and RV sites and group meeting facilities.
