Horseback riding, fishing, or hiking the trails of F.D. Roosevelt State Park are other great ways to spend the day in our area. At Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park, visitors can enjoy many outdoor activities and experience a little history at the same time. President Franklin D. Roosevelt often picnicked at Dowdell’s Knob, (elevation 1,395 feet), an overlook along the Pine Mountain Trail with picnic tables and sweeping views of the valley. The Pine Mountain Trail’s 23 miles lead past moss-covered rock outcroppings and waterfalls, providing several options for long and short hikes. A small lake in the park is open to fishing and canoeing, and picnic shelters are available. Visitors can spend the night in cabins or the campground.
To experience wooded bliss with a small-town vibe, take a walk on Pine Mountain’s new rail-to-trail path. The first three phases of the Man O’ War Railroad Recreation Trail have been completed. The trail begins in downtown Pine Mountain at Chipley Street. The total mileage of the 10-foot wide paved pedestrian trail is three miles.

Adjoining lively Pine Mountain is the stunning, 2,500-acre Callaway Gardens resort, complete with beautiful gardens, lakes, and lodging,. Millions of visitors have found respite for the weary, recreation for the restless, and adventure for all ages here. Nestled into the Southern foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Callaway Gardens exists “to connect man and nature in a way that benefits both.” Breathe in the sweet aroma of magnolias, stand face to face with a great horned owl, or marvel at a sea of brilliant azaleas. And, if you love spending your afternoon swinging a golf club, Callaway Gardens is home to one of the finest golf courses in the state.
