he U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began constructing Lake Allatoona in the 1940s, and they continue to maintain it today. About a one-hour-drive northwest of Atlanta, Lake Allatoona has beautiful recreation areas and is one of the most popular lake’s in Georgia. The lake is in a picturesque part of North Georgia between Cartersville and Woodstock. Stop by the Visitor Center for a fantastic view of the dam and to learn about local history, which includes Native American heritage, gold mining, and ironmaking.

Red Top Mountain State Park is on Lake Allatoona and has over 15 miles of trails that range in difficulty making it a great hiking destination for hikers of all skill levels. Other popular activities at Red Top Mountain State Park include swimming, boating, and fishing.
