Vlog – Anna Ruby Pass

Transcript:
Alright, so see this shrub right here? It’s called a Mountain Doghobble. And it’s in the same family, uh, with Rhododendrons and blueberries And, full disclosure, uh I I haven’t brushed up on my plants, and I I need to reveal my sources. They have a placard. They have a placard right there. So here we are at Anna Ruby Falls Trail It’s an easy one. It’s paved. It’s about half a mile from trailhead to finish. Uh, but it does not disappoint as evidenced by the 160,000 visitors it has every year. It’s close to Unicoi State Park which offers more ambitious hiking experiences. And I would’ve done those except You know, I don’t have all day. Literally, I The sun is about to come down, and while I do appreciate the Blair Witch aesthetic, I don’t think it would work for my hiking videos, uh, which I was thinking I I think I might call them Trail Trailers. I don’t know, I think it’s cute. So, Anna Ruby Falls, as it turns out uh, is two waterfalls You got Curtis Creek and, uh, York Creek, both originating on Tray Mountain spilling over exposed granite, joining at the base and merging into Smith Creek. All the names they stuck on this geography remind me of the kids who bullied me back in, uh basketball camp. Uh, but you know, what can you do? And what-what’s in a name? That which we call a bully by any other name would be as mean. The only critique I have of Anna Ruby Falls, really, is a sign I saw back there It was a warning sign about rattlesnakes. And I agreed with most of it. They’re members of the natural community. We should we should treat them with respect, I understand that. The line that gave me pause was: “They will not attack, but if disturbed or cornered they will defend themselves.” And, for me, it’s hard to imagine many hikers are preying on or posing intentionally posing a threat to rattlesnakes, so it’s just it’s hard for me to see how that would be considered self-defense, but that’s the only thing I would change about the hike. Uh, I just figured I’d include it, uh to be balanced. What else? Anna Ruby Falls is near Helen, Georgia, a Bavarian-themed town that I’m currently in actually. Honestly, I don’t know what I like better. Walking down Main Street in Helen or walking the trail. They’re totally different experiences, I They can’t be compared, but uh I did forget one detail that I wanted to mention about Anna Ruby Falls, and that is: Captain James Nichols named Anna Ruby Falls after his daughter, much like Dave Thomas named Wendy’s after his daughter. And, uh Yeah, I find myself thinking Would I rather have two waterfalls named after me or 6,500 burger outlets worldwide? And I think it’s a quality vs. quantity question.
